Why I'm fundraising
I am now in my final year of a 34 year career in the Army and wanted to end my service on a high. Attempting the Marathon Des Sables (MdS), ticked all the boxes; also known as the Sahara Marathon, the MdS is a six day, 251km (156miles) ultra-marathon which takes place in Southern Morocco. It is widely regarded as one of the most challenging and iconic ultra-running events; it was described by the Discovery Channel as the “toughest footrace on earth”.

I am running as part of a team of four officers, two male, two female and all over 50, from the Army Officer Selection Board. I am also passionate about being able to give something back to support all those soldiers who have been physically and mentally scarred through service in recent operations, many of which I too have been involved on. My aspiration is for to raise at least £5000 for the charity Walking with the Wounded (WWTW). I have chosen this outstanding charity as I have witnessed first-hand how it gives our wounded a real sense of purpose and self-worth; rather than simply providing funding and material help, WWTW challenges them both physically and mentally. The tasks undertaken through the charity require immense amounts of preparation and this has the huge benefit of directly addressing the often-hidden mental health issues. I cannot think of a more worthy cause.

Eastcheap Charitable Trust have kindly offered to match the first £1,000 of public donations to get the campaign off to a good start. This website, PLEDGIT, charges just 2% to cover its costs, makes no monthly charges to charities and charges nothing on the matched funds, so a very high percentage of the amount donated will go to WWTW.

Thank you for any support you can give.
