Why we're fundraising

In June 2019, 13 supporters of The Cure Parkinson’s Trust (CPT), including CPT Patron Mike Tindall MBE and fellow Rugby World Cup winner Iain Balshaw MBE, will be attempting the historic “Raid Pyrenean”, to raise vital funds for CPT’s search for a cure for Parkinson’s.

The Raid Pyrenean is an extreme cycle challenge from the Atlantic Coast to the Mediterranean in just 100 hours, traversing stunning French Pyrenees and covering 735km with 12,800m of ascent. It crosses many of the cols made famous by the Tour de France including Tourmalet, Aubisque, Col de Portet d'Aspet and Aspin.   Just to complete this challenge will be a severe test of fitness and endurance.

The team has a wide range of historic and current fitness levels.  Tindall and Balshaw MBEs are possibly at the upper end, but we will all need to train hard for months and then dig deep.  We will be cycling all day, at least, for nearly 5 days. 700km on the flat would be a challenge, but climbing 12km of altitude at the same time certainly adds an edge.

We are taking this on to raise funds for CPT’s research for a cure for Parkinson’s, a debilitating neurodegenerative disease.  Many of the team, including Mike and Iain, have been donating to and/or raising funds for CPT for years.  The condition has touched the lives of almost all of us.

There is no cure for Parkinson’s: CPT is dedicated to resolving that.   It funds projects that have the potential to slow, stop or reverse the progression of Parkinson’s.  It supports both pre-clinical research and clinical trials of promising candidate drugs.  At a time of exciting new developments in Parkinson’s research, CPT believes that it is the funding of research, rather than the science, which is the main obstacle to effective new curative therapies.

All donations will go to CPT.  Please support us in this extreme challenge and help us consign Parkinson’s to medical history.

Day 1: Hendaye to Oleron St Marie (163km with 2300m of ascent)
Day 2: Oloron St Marie to La Mongie (133km with 3620m ascent)
Day 3: La Mongie to St Girons (153km with 2900m ascent)
Day 4: St Girons to Prades (192km with 3400m ascent)
Day 5: Prades to Cerbere (95km with 620m ascent)

The team is:

David Adams, Iain Balshaw MBE, David Bieber, Sean Brew, Will Cook, Charlie Garner, Michael Moore, Jason Pollock, Steve Pollock, Jason Purcell, Steve Redding, Max Smith and Mike Tindall MBE.
