Why we're pledging
Dear friends, colleagues and partners,

As some of you know, I will be racing across the Atlantic from the 10th February 2018 with my long time sailing buddy Patrick, in support of Multiple Sclerosis.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a complex neurological condition for which there is currently no cure. It is one of the most common conditions impacting the central nervous system and the main cause of non-traumatic disability in young adults. It affected not only my mother but also around 700,000 people in Europe only.

Our close family friend Virginie in London is one of them. Virginie has lost the use of her legs and arms, and increasingly struggles with her speech and swallowing, becoming heavily dependent. The first £10,000 we raise will part-fund indispensable care required in complement to the NHS, making her day-to-day life bearable. All additional donations will go towards research for more and better treatments through the UK's MS Society.

Our race across the Atlantic is double-handed on board a 10.5m sailing boat (named 'Shaitan') and should last about 2 weeks from Madeira to The French Caribbean, following the traditional 18th century trade routes.

Offshore racing is challenging owing to strong winds, constant wet conditions, and sleep deprivation. Double-handed racing gets even more complex as the small crew has to tackle every aspect of the race from tactics and navigation to sail trimming, boat balance, and nutrition. Weather forecasting is also paramount to plot the appropriate course while sail changes can be particularly difficult for the two of us in strong winds at night.

But all this is nothing compared to what MS inflicts on people night and day. When I asked Virginie what her biggest challenge was, she simply replied ‘to be a normal mum". No dream or challenge is too big. Virginie wants to dream, relentlessly.

To make a donation, be it small or big, you can sponsor Patrick and me via the 'Donate' button below:

You will be able to follow our progress on the race web site. Search for 'Duo Lorient'. The boat name is 'Shaïtan'.

Also enjoy a short You Tube video of the first leg of the race that took place last July.

Thank you for your generosity.
