On the 8th June 2019 I will be taking part in the South Downs Way 100mile race. This is a foot race taking in the entire South Downs Way National Trail, starting just outside of Winchester and heading due east until the trail ends in Eastbourne
I am aiming to raise £2000 for two charities: Acorn Children's Hospice and Highreach Holidays. My niece, Amalie, got very ill when she was 2 years old and suffered from brain damage, leaving her disabled and needing 24 hour care and support. The Acorn Children’s Hospice continues to support Amalie, and her family.
Highreach Holidays is a small volunteer-run organisation that provides an annual week-long residential holiday for amazing children like Amalie and young adults, aged 8 -16 years old, with a range of learning difficulties, who may also have physical disabilities or medical conditions. It allows them to enjoy an incredible week full of memorable experiences in the safe environment of Highfield and Brookham Schools and includes activities such as swimming, art, outdoor games and trips out to the seaside, zoo and adventure parks. It also provides crucial respite for the families of these children.
How did I get into ultra-running? I have always loved running but never been built for speed, so decided to give the London Marathon a go and enjoyed it so much I did it again and again. After that I just rocked up to longer and longer races until my brother and I took on and completed the Marathon De Sable. I had to take a few years out from ultra-running after starting a family, moving overseas and enjoying playing rugby. However after a neck injury I took it up again, and fast forward a couple of years and a few more races, including the Gobi Challenge, I am now here attempting the SDW100 – my longest single race.
The hardest thing about training is trying to fit it in around kids and work! What keeps me going on the long races?...breaking down the race stage by stage, the food (you can eat as much as you like!), the peace, the challenge and just enjoying it. I cannot wait to cross the finish line and give Soph and the boys a (sweaty) hug!
