Why I'm pledging
As someone who likes to jump on a bike at every opportunity, I was very drawn to World Bicycle Relief when I first read about their work.

This fantastic charity brings a simple solution to the stubborn problem of distance, and the time and energy wasted in rural Africa by schoolchildren, farmers and medical workers walking to their schools, markets or clinics.

A bike makes a HUGE difference. It slashes journey times and increases carrying capacity. Children spend more time in school, farmers get their goods to market, and health workers treat more patients.

World Bicycle Relief makes sure that the bikes it supplies are fit for the terrain they're used in. There's no point in shipping out bikes made for tarmac roads - they'd fall apart in weeks. WBR's specially designed, locally assembled bikes are tough, and spare parts are available. Community mechanics are trained to maintain the bikes so that if something goes wrong, the owner can be back on the road in hours. It's sustainable in every way.

World Bicycle Relief don't just give the bikes away. They operate work-to-own and study-to-own programs so that the bikes get to people who really need them. In the last 10 years, they've supplied over 260,000 bikes to ordinary people in some of the neediest parts of the world.

If you want to do something for the hardworking people in these countries, you can't do better than make a donation to World Bicycle Relief. £95 gets a bicycle into the hands of a school girl in Zambia, Kenya or South Africa, but what it actually buys is a massive improvement in their quality of life and the knock-on benefit to that person's family and community is substantial.

Vulpine, the British cycle clothing company, have got behind this campaign and are matching the first £2,500 of public donations pound-for-pound. If you give, they give, so effectively your donation is doubled.

I'm proud to support World Bicycle Relief, I hope you'll join me in backing this excellent cause.

Simon
