Why we're fundraising

Following last year’s success, a team of parent, Old Bedalian, pupil and staff runners is again entering one of the world’s leading running events - the Great South Run - in Portsmouth on 20 and 21 October 2018.

We are raising funds for two worthy education causes that are working to transform the lives of young people:

John Badley Foundation - providing opportunities for children who do not have the means to consider independent education to attend Bedales and Dunhurst.

Cecily’s Fund - enabling orphans and vulnerable children to gain an education in Zambia so that they are able to reach their true potential and have better futures.

These charities were very grateful for the £8,000 raised last year (let's beat that this year!). Here’s some local press coverage from 2017.

We are again very grateful to PLEDGIT and The Country House Company for their sponsorship; this means that the first £1,000 we raise will be matched.

Alison and Basil Eastwood, co-founders of Cecily's Fund:
"We are delighted that a team from Bedales is again competing in the Great South Run for Cecily’s Fund. Cecily loved her time at Bedales from 1991 to1996 - and Bedales loved her. She was working with Zambian children orphaned by AIDS when tragically she died in a car crash in June 1997 just at the end of her gap year. Her Fund continues her work. It enables orphans and vulnerable children to go to school, supports them to succeed at school, prepares them for life beyond school, and strengthens community support for their education. Since its inception has enabled over 20,000 destitute children to complete their school education, not least thanks to the support of the school she loved."

Stephen Walls, Bedales parent:
"As one of the runners in the Great South Run last year I am delighted that we are going to organise a repeat once again this year with the excellent support of Pledgit and Country House Company. It is a great fun day out, great camaraderie, with the added benefit of raising some good money for the two excellent causes being the John Badley Foundation and Cecily’s Fund. Hopefully we can field a strong team again from the body of parents, pupils as well as school staff. Age and current fitness level should not be a barrier!!  Further down the road on fundraising hopefully we can also get the support of all the Bedales family to help us surpass the monies raised last year."

Albie Waterton OB (2012-14), John Badley Foundation beneficiary:
"One of the key things that I came away from Bedales having learnt and I find myself using in my day to day life is to never miss an opportunity when it arises. So whenever there is a chance for me to give back to the John Badley Foundation, it is the least that I can do for all it has given to me. Running alongside other friends of the school last year was so rewarding. It's a great feeling knowing that you are contributing to make a significant change in someone else's life. It is one of the most gratifying things you can do and fills me with pride."

Philip Jenks, Founder of Pledgit:
“Bedales Great South Run is just the sort of fundraising initiative PLEDGIT likes to support - lots of people of all ages doing something tough and gritty in aid of two excellent causes. Hats off to all the runners!”
