Blow The Oars Off is a team of five novice rowers: Jonny Marson, Toby Hanson, Jonny Barrett, Charlie Wardroper and Patrick Barrett, currently training for an epic adventure – NOMAN is an Island: Race to End HPV Ibiza - Barcelona 2019.
At the end of July 2019, we’ll battle mental and physical fatigue, salt sores and seasickness to row non-stop across the Mediterranean from Ibiza to Barcelona. Our aim is to break the 2015 record for the fastest transit by a five-man crew and complete the challenge in less than three days. Here’s a teaser of what’s in store: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UrzOecBACA
Collectively we’re aiming to raise £25,000 for a very worthwhile cause. Since 2013, the NOMAN Campaign has raised $3 million in the fight against HPV, the causal agent of 5% of all cancers. The funds raised from this race will go towards eradicating this virus for good and preventing millions of cancers in the process. This feat can be accomplished through the universal vaccination of girls AND boys – recent research shows that the risk of men contracting HPV-related oral cancer is rising, but boys are not routinely vaccinated in most countries.
As well as campaigning for preventative measures, the foundation behind NOMAN is working hard to accelerate drug development for patients with advanced HPV-related cancers.
We’re in awe of everything the founders have achieved since the loss of their mother to HPV-related cancer inspired them to start the foundation in 2010 and feel proud to join them on their mission to end the suffering caused by this virus – we’ll be giving it everything we’ve got.
