On 25 July 2019, I will begin a 200-mile ocean rowing race from Ibiza to Barcelona. I’ll be in a crew of five, racing 4 other crews on a course that is likely to take 3 days. Yes, that’s 3 days of rowing, in the Mediterranean ocean, in a small boat, with no loo!
The challenge is going to test us physically and mentally. But it will be worth it. I’m taking part because I wanted to do something ‘big’ for my 40th birthday, but more importantly, I wanted to do something worthwhile.
The money we raise is going to a great cause. NOMAN aims to raise awareness about the HPV-related cancer epidemic in men and women and campaign for universal HPV vaccination.
HPV is the causal agent of around 5% of all cancer cases, including cancer of the cervix, mouth and throat. But HPV vaccination can significantly reduce the risk of developing the disease that can lead to these cancers.
We all have personal experiences of cancer. It is devastating. I’m raising money for NOMAN, because I want to help stop someone and their love ones from suffering.
I will be training for a year to ensure I’m fit enough for the race. I’ll also be going back to school to learn about sea survival, first aid, seamanship, and radio calls. I’m pledging to put in the necessary hours, suffer many blisters and overcome seasickness. In exchange I hope you’ll be able to pledge a few pounds to help me reach my £5,000 target.
You guys are the best!
