Why I'm pledging
Thank you for visiting my fundraising page, Just a couple more clicks now and we will be closer to reaching the target of £10,000 for Anthony Nolan.

In June 2014, my very close friend from university, Georgie Ireland's father, Rob, was diagnosed with lymphoma and was told he needed a stem cell (otherwise known as bone marrow) transplant in order to survive. However, there was no suitable match for him on the worldwide stem cell register. Georgie and her sisters began a campaign, Give Our Dad A Bone, in order to raise awareness and recruit more people to sign up as potential stem cell donors via the Anthony Nolan register. Within 3 months the Ireland family had 47,000 followers on their Facebook page, appeared on Good Morning Britain and Sky News, and in the process convinced thousands to sign up as potential lifesavers. Please visit www.giveourdadabone.com to find out more about the family's story and anthonynolan.org for more on the charity's lifesaving work.

Sadly Rob's form of lymphoma was so aggressive and rare they were unable to reach the stage of stem cell transplant and he died peacefully at home with his family by his side in September 2015. However, with Rob's lifelong mantra of PMA (positive mental attitude) Georgie & her sisters's campaign carries on today. With the shocking statistic that 37,000 people in the world need a stem cell transplant and only 50% of them will ever find a match, it is imperative that no family must endure the added stress of not finding a donor. This does not need to be the case as there is a match for everyone out there.

In December 2015, a friend from Bristol University Lara Casalotti was diagnosed with rapidly progressing Myeloid Leukaemia. Like Georgie, she launched a hugely successful campaign to attract people to join national bone marrow registries; it was supported by the likes of J K Rowling, Stephen Fry and even the Prime Minister. Against all the odds, on 4th February 2016, Lara's donor was found; a 1 in 26 million chance! Please visit her website for more information on this incredible story: match4lara.com

For the last four months I have been training for the toughest footrace on Earth, the Marathon des Sables, six days of hell in which we will complete six marathons in the Sahara desert in heats averaging 40 - 50°C. There's a good chance of us picking up heat exhaustion, dehydration or being stung and bitten by a venomous creature. Let's hope none of that happens, but it makes the fundraising part a little more interesting.

People are signing up at a very fast pace; however each member comes at a cost of £60 to Anthony Nolan and this is where we need your help. Any money you can donate will help the organisation grow and ultimately save more and more lives. Every penny you donate will go straight to Anthony Nolan.

Thanks so much,

Tim
