This spring Leo and Matthew (Team Moskus) will be travelling to Arctic Greenland, undertaking a 40-day expedition with both scientific and mountaineering objectives. We will be conducting climate-change research in the Stauning Alps region of eastern Greenland, as well as attempting numerous first ascents of unclimbed mountains within that range.
We have already secured funding for our expedition, and this PLEDGIT Campaign is in NO WAY to raise funds for ourselves or for the Greenland endeavour.
However, our expedition provides us with both a platform and a significant challenge - the two essential ingredients of charitable fundraising - and so we want to use this opportunity to raise some money for two causes that are close to our hearts. The charities we have chosen may seem a disparate pairing, but both have relevance to our team and our expedition, and tackle issues that affect almost all of us at some point in our lives:
• Trees for Life is a wonderful charity, based in northwest Scotland, which we have already used to offset the carbon emissions from our expedition. As ardent polar enthusiasts, we have both encountered the realities of climate change in the far north, and would love GRNLND 2018 to have a positive impact, however small, in helping preserve the frozen world we cherish. Trees for Life are committed to restoring the Caledonian Forest - a unique ecosystem which once covered vast swathes of northern Scotland, and was the temperate equivalent of a tropical rainforest. It now occupies a mere 1% of its former range, but supports some of the UK's most important endemic wildlife, like the Scottish wildcat, the crossbill and the capercaillie. Through ecological restoration, Trees for Life not only sequesters greenhouse gases, but also contributes to mitigating flooding, and safeguarding biodiversity in the Scottish Highlands.
• Anxiety UK is a brilliant charity that has been confronting anxiety disorder in all its many guises since its inception in 1970. Since then, the prevalence of anxiety has increased dramatically across the Western world, and support for those suffering its effects is becoming ever more stretched. It is particularly prevalent among our own generation, and its signature is all too familiar for many of us. With the constant anxiety we shall doubtless feel camping unsupported in the kingdom of the polar bear in mind, this too, is a cause to which we would love to contribute.
We chose to use this platform - Pledgit - because its fees are less than half what JustGiving charge, and Pledgit also gives us the opportunity to put our money where our mouth is by match-funding the first £400 of your donations with our own money. This means that a very high proportion of whatever you give will reach the charities and be put to good use.
